Happy Sunday, folks!

You may or may not know... the five of you reading this blog who aren't already my friends... that my friend Josie Eli has just published her first book! It's called The Prince of Rumandy, and I actually had the opportunity to read one of the first edits a few years ago. It was good then, so I can't wait to read the finished product. Saturday (8/29) was Josie's launch party of sorts, so I brought my camera and y'all along with me just for kicks. It was a lovely afternoon.

Also, Aemelia popped over for a few hours this week to sort out some of the pictures from last week's wedding, and we ended up dancing like fools half the time. It was fantastic. My neighbors think we're insane. They may not be wrong.

Next week is an extremely busy, extremely exciting week for me - which includes traveling, and there will most likely be multiple video blogs coming out of it, so keep yer eyes peeled! (What does that even mean? Also, gross.)

The Way of Beauty

The Way of Beauty

Pope Francis, in his apostolic exhortation The Joy of the Gospel, has called for a “way of beauty” - via pulchritudinis. The Holy Father explains: “Proclaiming Christ means showing that to believe in and to follow him is not only something right and true, but also something beautiful, capable of filling life with new splendor and profound joy, even in the midst of difficulties. Every expression of true beauty can thus be acknowledged as a path leading to an encounter with the Lord Jesus” (#167).

Who fulfills this better than the Blessed Virgin Mary? As J.R.R. Tolkien put it, “all my own perception of beauty both in majesty and simplicity is founded upon Our Lady.”

Why a way of beauty? I once heard a remarkable talk by the poet Dana Gioia in which he said that the absence of beauty in the world has left a hole in our thinking. People instinctively seek beauty, not logic. Those who manage to change the world do so by embodying their ideas - turning them into something beautiful. He contended that if the Church fails to offer a beautiful vision to the world, then people will stay away. And I think he is right.

CLASSIC CARS & A LITTLE HAUL | vlog #woodwarddreamcruise

Hello, Hanlin Family!

First order of business, I'd like to draw your attention to my latest film review, for Kristen Wiig's Welcome to Me. Surprisingly, that particular post shot up to my "most viewed" list almost immediately after I posted it last Wednesday. I'm guessing it's because there wasn't a Catholic review of it yet. But that's just my speculation. Anyway, read that after you watch this week's vlog. *winks*

Yes, I was shamelessly tooting my own horn just now.

Welcome to Me (R) 2015 {Review}

Alice Klieg (Kristen Wiig) has never been stable. Diagnosed with severe bipolar, borderline personality disorder... and divorced, extremely self-absorbed, living on disability with a fixation on Oprah Winfrey, deadpan Alice finds herself the state lottery winner of $84 million.

Last week was a big week for me. Huge, actually, because last week I moved away from home and into an apartment in the city with a roommate and bills. Adulthood, y'all. Also, a tree fell on our chicken coop and completely demolished it, so that's exciting.

Hello, Hanlin family.

Oy, the last two weeks have been a whirlwind of ups and downs, so this vlog is another short one, but in the interest of consistency, I thought I'd make a little video anyway.
