7 Things I've Learned in the Past Few Months

1. If you eat less and exercise more and drink lots of water, weight loss happens. And it's a lot easier to commit to than fad diets.

2. Speaking of food, processed sugar is a killer. I have not had one speck (and I mean one speck - and oh boy, did that kill my self control at first) of processed sugar for about a month and a half, and I have never felt better. I have so much more energy, and have lost a couple unneeded pounds.

3. Jonathan Crombie (Gilbert Blythe) meant more to me than I realized. As I posted to Facebook when I learned of his untimely death, rarely am I legitimately saddened by a celebrity death - but oh no, that is not the case with Gil. Anne of Green Gables has been a massive part of my life ever since I was a little girl, and it actually seems like a personal friend has passed away. It's strange, but understandable, I suppose. (Especially since most if not all of my standards for acquiring a male and the quality of said male have been based on his character for quite a while.) I don't quite have words at the moment to describe what I'm feeling about this.

Happy day, friends and readers and viewers and mom and all you beautiful land mermaids!

Today, as promised, I have a hedgehog-themed question-and-answer for you as part of this week's vlog, thanks to all of you who had a question about these wee critters and asked it. If you have a hoggie-related question that wasn't answered in this video, feel free to leave it in the comments and I'll answer it in a part two.

Crepe-cakes {recipe}

Here's a wee vlog-style cooking video (very cringey) that I made back in January and completely forgot about until this morning: one of my favorite comfort-food recipes. I hope you enjoy it!

Earth Day

Well, friends and readers, April 22 is Earth Day. On this day, people in over a hundred countries will (probably) gather and demonstrate in favor of environmental protection. At least, that's what happened last year.

Pope Francis' prayer intention for this month is this: That people may learn to respect creation and care for it as a gift of God.

The preservation of our beautiful world is so important. My family has been recycling since before I was born. We dispose of corroded batteries and broken electronics safely. Financials don't permit us to have fancy electric cars, but we do what we can. I have a garden full of organic, healthy food. This planet was given to us at the beginning of time, and we were charged with the care of it. Adam's first job was to preserve the Garden of Eden. "The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it." (Gen 2:15) And, God himself specifically told Moses to forbid the pollution of land in the Jewish Torah (Numbers 35:33). We were created partly for this purpose.

Last week was a very quiet, uneventful one - lots of time was spent wrapping up my last semester of college (for a while, anyway), finishing exams and making sure everything was turned in. But, I was able to spend a lot of time outside now that the weather has become consistently glorious. Enzo is loving it, too. Enjoy!

(I stuck a few neat time lapses in there for ya. They're my favorite.)

Also, I was thinking of doing a wee hedgehog themed Q&A as a part of next week's vlog, if y'all are interested. If you have any hedge-related questions, send them my way via any of the social medias or leave them in the comments here!

Chocolate Brownies / Power Bars

A few weeks ago, my parents and I spend a quite lovely (and impromptu for me) evening at some new friends' home (we'll call them the G family) where we exchanged a handful of our most loved and used recipes. We gave them our cauliflower pizza crust and our morning glory muffin recipe among others, and they sent us home with some of their after feeding us plenty of tried-n-true samples. Thank you, G family! I've tried my hand at a few of the recipes already, and I thought I'd share one of them with you today.

The first one is a recipe for chocolate fudge brownies / energy bars that, honestly, I did not expect to enjoy because I noticed plain yogurt as an ingredient - and if you've been watching my video blogs, you'll know that I am not a fan of plain yogurt. But I was surprised by the fact that they were delicious, and that said evil demon juice yogurt was almost completely undetectable. I'm a fan.

I hope you are all having a lovely Easter season!

I went to the Sea Life Michigan Aquarium yesterday with Jenna (Call Her Happy) and her family, and it was a terrific experience. The animals and the displays were so interesting and beautiful - I could have stayed there all day. (And we had a chance to pet starfish! Nerd alert.)

Mid-April Favorites {video}

I'll readily admit this isn't the highest quality video I've ever made, but I thought I'd post it anyway because I wouldn't have a video today otherwise. Besides, who doesn't like a favorites video, regardless of its lameness? And before anyone wonders - I know the thumbnail says "March Favorites." I had originally intended to post this in march, but obviously that didn't happen. Hooray, planning ahead.

Previous blog post mentioned in the video: How I use coconut oil and lemons to treat acne. ( <- click that.)

2 All-Natural Acne Treatments that Work for Me (& maybe you)

Hello, Hanlin family!

If you're like me... well, if you're human AND NOT A MACHINE, you get acne every so often, and I don't think I need to explain why it’s not lovely. Acne almost always attacks me with vengeance a few days before the special womanly time of the month rolls around, and usually I just deal with it, never being one to seek out meds for that kind of thing (or anything, really). Besides, I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars trying out different drugs that may or may not work for me.

A few months ago, I was pretty desperate to get rid of my exceptionally vibrant blemishes because not only did they make my face look like a war zone (having very pale skin makes it difficult to smoothly conceal blemishes, the Irish curse), but they were starting to get quite painful.

So, I putzed around online for a few hours and came away with a list of all-natural ways to treat acne, using only ingredients found on God's good earth, and two of them have worked especially well for me.

Today, I thought I'd share with ya lovely folks these two things!

Happy Easter, my dear friends and readers!  May the JOY of our Risen Jesus, and His LOVE, which conquered Death once and for all, be yours this Eastertide and always.

Early spring in Palestine.  Poppies and mayweed dot the countryside, and the light scent of the joss flower wafts in the breeze.  A new dawn slowly breaks, and an event absolutely unique to human history takes place.  A man, beaten to a bloody pulp and nailed to a rugged piece of  wood until He died, rose from the dead and saved the human race from eternal damnation.  From that moment, this world could not, cannot, and will not ever be the same.

We live in a culture that is afraid of the Resurrection (partly because it's afraid of the Cross), but we were made for glory, and we can grasp it through Jesus Christ.  Our Risen Christ is waiting in the tabernacle, ready to give Himself to us in the Eucharist as the pledge of future glory: "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day." John 6:54

So, will you sing hallelujah with me?

And now, for this Sunday's vlog. I wrote a bit about my experience at the DSO under the video.
