mellow mushroom {restaurant review}

There is a haven for the wearied traveler to duck in away from the rain and oily pavement, guarded stoically by the Terminator himself. Yes.

It's a hip and lively pizzeria, home of quite a few original recipes, signature homemade and hand-tossed pizza dough - soft with just enough crunch. Warm smiles greeted our entry, and we were seated in a colorful booth beneath a ceiling covered in pizza pans.
I am neither a vegetarian, nor a vegan, but looking over the menu, I noticed terrific menus for both parties, and plenty of gluten-free options. As an appetizer, we ordered their spinach artichoke dip with garlic bread. It was light and creamy and smooth, and the garlic butter on the bread accompanied the flavor parfaitement. Perfectly. I tasted mozzarella and parmesan at least, with just the right amount of spinach for my preference (I'm not one for a spinach dip made entirely from spinach). Paradox, I know.
We couldn't visit Mellow Mushroom without ordering a mushroom dish, so we tried a stuffed portobello. I haven't had one of these for years, and I was not disappointed. Spinach, feta, and parmesan baked inside a mushroom head, and drizzled ever so lightly in balsamic vinegar. It was big enough to split between four people, and enjoyed by all.
For the "main course," the parents ordered a gluten free, half cheese and tomato / half garden (cheese, tomatoes, black olives, green peppers, onions). They mentioned the crust to be a wee bit crunchier than they'd hoped, even for a thin crust, but other than that, their choice was a hit.
Navy Bro and I, on the other hand, ordered a Philosopher's Pie. All pizza crusts at the Mellow Mushroom are homemade and hand-tossed (I got some super neat pictures of the guys tossing the dough, but I don't want to post them here without their knowledge - faces and all that), and ours had the base of olive oil and garlic - two of my favorites. No pizza sauce, but topped with parmesan and mozzarella, artichokes, steak, red greek olives, and sliced mushrooms. It was delectable, and the large was enough for lunch the next day.
All in all, I'm a fan of Mellow Mushroom. Delicious food, relaxing atmosphere, and good service.

So, if you're in the Fayetteville area, stop on by. You won't be disappointed.

  1. Mellow Mushroom is my favourite pizza place in the world! I used to go to a lot when I lived in North Carolina as a kid.

    I was ecstatic when I discovered they were all across the country. By far some of the best pizza I have ever come into contact with. Their vegan pizza is scrumptious!

    All the best,
