+ thanks giving +

And here we are...  Thanksgiving Day has rolled around once again, and before I log off to begin the litany of Thanksgivingly preparations for the evening's feast, I thought I'd share some of the things I'm thankful for.  Because, y'all, what with all it's ups and downs, my life is still pretty darned amazing.

-✧- for my family.  We're crazy, and weird, and loud, and we fight a lot, and I love you, and I thank God for you every day.

things you may not know about me

... and may or may not find interesting.

I'm sure that most of us on Facebook have already seen this... but there's a "game" going around where people list a certain number of personal facts in a status.  I was tagged by Miss Abbey Noelle, and the other day, I finally caved and participated.  I thought it might be fun to share some of the things about myself here!  So, not in order of importance or relevance, here we go.  (I added and deleted a few of the facts for both lameness and privacy reasons.)

what i wore sunday (jones new york)

Happy Tuesday, y'all.  Yes, I realize this is a few days late.
In case you missed Sunday night's post, I'm pleased to share with y'all that a friend of mine and her husband came into full communion with the Catholic Church!  Hooray for baby Catholics!

(Click here to read Sunday's musings on the Solemnity of Christ the King.)

This is what I wore.

welcome home (feast of Christ the King)

I'm so happy to tell y'all that a sweet, sweet friend of mine and her husband are now officially Catholic! This morning, on the feast of Christ the King, Keisha was baptized, she and her husband David were confirmed, and both received their First Holy Communion.

this & that ~ 7QT (vol. 29)

Greetings, Hanlinites.  See what I did there?  I'm trying to think of a clever name for my readers, and that's what I have for now.  If you have an idea, throw it my way.  I'm all ears!  (Or, eyes rather.)

1.  Angela!

Pope Awesome || book review + GIVEAWAY - CLOSED -

Remember that summer book list link-up I hosted way back when?  Yeah, those grandiose dreams never happened.  I haven't read through a whole book for "recreational purposes" since high school, come to think of it.  Such is the life of a working college student.  (Don't let that stop you, kids.  College is great.)

BUT BUT BUT, I was able to work around multiple scholarly duties a few weeks ago and read a book written by a relatively new friend of mine, Pope Awesome and Other Stories: How I Found God, Had Kids, and Lived to Tell the Tale.

And even though I'm a little late to this game, I thought I'd write a review, and host a giveaway for ya!

Sound good?  Alllllllrighty, then.

the second coming & ebenezer scrooge

As a part of this past Sunday's homily, my pastor posed this question to us:  If, suddenly, we were to receive a legitimate announcement that the world will end today at 2 p.m., what would the impact be on our lives?  It might be hard to imagine, considering the multiple false "alarms" in the past that were never fulfilled, but, just, what if...?  What would our reaction be?  I have a feeling mine would be something like panic, and then me rushing to find a priest for confession.

new favorite word

sonder
n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

fall stripes {wet seal}

I've only recently been introduced to the wonders of a good maxi skirt (thank you, Caitlin), and over the summer, I've added a few to my wardrobe at the prodding of the aforementioned young lady and my mother.  (I still hate shopping and you will not break me of that.)

I am not (and have never been nor will ever be) in favor of sweatpants or yoga pants being worn in public - unless you're in a fitness center, and even then... - but they are just so gosh darned comfortable, and a maxi skirt, I think, is just the right compromise, since it's made of the same fabric, but it's much more modest and classy and oh, so comfy.

This lovely little stripey maxi (to which I am very partial) is from Wet Seal, a store whose management I've grown to respect for a few reasons over the past few weeks.  One of them is their choice of Karrie, a 17-year-old girl, for their newest star model.  Karrie has Downs Syndrome.  I APPROVE.  (Read more about Karrie here.)

dead trees

I just really like dead trees.  I don't mean leafless trees which have just gone dormant for the winter, but the really dead ones that have lived a long life (or not), and are most definitely going to stay dead.

banana walnut bread {yum}

Greetings, blog world!

Short story time before we get to the bread:  Whenever my mother or I are given a recipe, we write the name of the person who gave it to us by the title as a reminder to pray for that person as we use his/her  recipe.  The wonderful lady who gave us today’s recipe was a friend of my mother’s, and has since passed away, so I just ask for you to keep the repose of her soul in her prayers as you use it.

Having said that, Mary S.’s Banana Walnut Bread has been one of the most used recipes in our house.

our closest friend

I attended a mini twilight retreat last Wednesday night with my university's Campus Ministry organization.  I'm usually not one for retreats or small groups, but it's funny how God puts you exactly where you need to be exactly when you need to be there.  He's constantly popping us in and out of places and experiences we need (though the reason may be unbeknownst to us), and lately, He's been giving me gentle - and not so gentle - reminders that it's Him doing it, because most of the time I don't even notice.

speechless

I woke up this morning prepared to write a long, enthralling (...right) post about all of the autumnal, lifey goings-on around the ranch, but then I stepped outside into my backyard and saw this:

And I am speechless.

when i am just a soul ~ a poem

I should preface this with a wee explanation.  My friend Jenna, who writes Call Her Happy, wrote a post on her birthday laying out her final wishes.  She called it partly When I am Just a Soul.  Something in that title struck a chord, so I borrowed it, and wrote a poem.

right-side-upside-down // photo challenge mission #2

I hope everyone had fun with the last challenge!  I sure enjoyed looking through all the photos y'all sent me.  One of my favorite things about photography is that it's so easy to catch a spontaneous (and sometimes unexpected) reaction. :)  Great job, everyone.  I hope everyone feels loved, because it's quite obvious you are.

And now, it's time for.....

it's black and white! {what i wore dancing}

Hello there, blog world.  I hope you are well.

Last night, a very special person whisked me away to a black-and-white themed swing dance at a little church near my town.  It was a dream.  But now I am so, so sore.  Dancing all night in heels does that to a person.  But it's so worth it.
It was just such a marvelous night...

giveaway inquiries & tidbits (vol. 2), 7QT (vol. 27)

I am an Instagramaholic.  I admit it, and I am not ashamed.  I just love how easy it is to share bits and pieces of our lives in pictures with one another, especially when one doesn't have the time or access to a big "mamma camera."

Clare of Come Further Up has recently started sharing some of her instagrammings on her blog, and I thought I might join in the fun every so often, since many of my favorite pictures don't make it to the CGD Facebook Page for y'all to see. :)
